Stunning property let down by poor departure service
Riffelalp Resort 2222m is truly exceptional in almost every aspect—from its breathtaking Matterhorn views to its beautiful amenities and dining. However, a frustrating departure experience left a sour final impression on an otherwise great stay.
- Check-in & Arrival (August 26): Flawless service. The porter who handled our luggage upon arrival was warm, professional, and attentive.
- Overall Stay: Rooms, food, and facilities were top-tier, living up to the hotel’s luxury standards.
- Check-out & Departure (Afternoon of August 28): In stark contrast to arrival, the porter handling our luggage was completely indifferent. After transporting our bags via the resort tram to the train station, he simply dumped the luggage on the ground and walked away. He made zero effort to move the bags onto the platform, let alone assist with lifting them onto the Gornergrat train. To make matters worse, it was raining heavily; he held an umbrella for himself without offering any shelter or umbrella assistance to us while we struggled with our bags in the rain.
At this price point and caliber, you expect consistent five-star hospitality from start to finish. Leaving guests to haul heavy luggage through the rain while staff look on is unacceptable for a resort of this reputation.
The dogs were very welcome: because we had 3 Bearded Collies it was organized that we could have breakfast in the bar. That was very thoughtful and relaxing. The rooms are beautiful with a view of the Matterhorn so close! I loved the shower which gave the effect of being in a cave of stunning granite. The location is at an altitude which is just perfect for hiking at all levels T1 toT4.
So what was so disappointing? The food was not made with care, no fresh ingredients. I was wondering how it’s possible not to be able to make for example a poached egg. Every other place I have been to on the holidays of 14 days was better. Even the most simple restaurant. The Riffelberg had delicious food. So Riffelalp Resort wakes up. I will be back when the menu is changed and offers fresh ingredients, more attention, quality ingredients and just a bit creativity.
More guests love Riffelalp just the only thing missing is good food. That’s something to look forward to.
Spent an amazing summer weekend here. Happened to be the same time as the marathon and what a treat that was. Food was delicious, room was amazingly comfortable, Spa was clean and quiet. Trying to find our way back. The tiny train that takes you to the hotel is almost the best part. Staff was warm and friendly, they learned your name and knew your beverage preferences day 1. Cannot wait to stay again.
Excellent service from start to finish. Staff, food, views, all spectacular. The spa is the only aspect of the resort that doesn’t meet the 5 star expectations. The hot tubs are luke warm due to pumping cold water through the jets, and my wife had a very disappointing massage experience with a newer therapist. The hotel management acted quickly and took our feedback promptly and professionally. Despite the spa letdown, I would strongly advise anyone visiting Zermatt to stay here. You won’t be disappointed! 10/10
Though the virtue of a hotel and its stars lie in its grander, location, ambience , Resturant’s , pools , the spa and Rifflealp aces in all these accolade and is one of the best 5 star hotels in the world.
However at Rifflealp these 5 stars shining most brilliantly in the sky of hotels are pale in comparison to the pleasant smiling faced stars , in the doorways , the hallways , behind the concierge desk reception desk, the restaurants , behind the wheels of the curtesy snowmobile shuttle who are willing to pander to every small whim , every desire and every need of their guests.
Although more often than not the guests entering the doors of the Rifflealp are nobilities and celebrities who are familiar with feeling special but the Rifflealp personal make even a common man like myself feel very special.
The Rifflealp experience starts even before you enter the doors with the well clad valet team and the bell men who welcome with alacrity at the Zermatt train station or helipad.
They get your luggage and transport it to Gornargrat train station. They give you the tickets and position you in the train. At the Rifflealp station there is an other team of people to welcome you and take your luggage and you on the snow mobile to the hotel.
In the week we stayed there not once did they let us feel unwelcome.
One has hardly entered the doors when a reception team welcomes every member of the family individually and take you to the room efficiently.
Ski slopes , shopping , trains or dining which are all less a hop away. The snow mobile drivers are an embodiment of the word curtsy.
I being a discerning observer of people can write a paragraph on the excellence of service of every employee but I cannot finish the review without mentioning a few individuals who makes the stay indelible . Top of the list are concierges Stefan Becker and his young protégée Tristan Weiss who would leave no leaf unturned to make the stay comfortable and memorable.
The availability , vigilance of the staff and memory of guest and their needs is incredible
I would also like to recognize Pasquale , Vittorio Guillaume and Oliver for their pleasant , smiling and helpful disposition.
This letter would not be consummate if I forget to acknowledge management staff and the ships Captains who make all the machinery well oiled. Their perennial and welcoming smile and willingness to help is very appreciative.
“Better it is to spend a single day at the Rifflealp with those you love than to build a Taj Mahal in the memory of those you loved. “
Next time if God wills I will bring my children and grand children.

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) above sea level, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. Sometimes referred to as the "Mountain of Mountains" (German: Berg de
The Dufourspitze is the highest peak of Monte Rosa, an ice-covered mountain massif in the Alps. Dufourspitze is the highest mountain of both Switzerland and the Pennine Alps and is also the second-highest mountain of the Alps and Western Europe, after Mont Blanc. It is located between Switzerland (Canton of Valais) and Italy (Piedmont and Aosta Valley).
