Winter sports in February: skiers on a snow-covered slope in the mountains under a blue sky

Average temperature and rainfall in February by country

February can vary greatly from country to country. The same temperature often feels milder by the coast than in the mountains. In ski resorts, precipitation in February often falls as snow, whilst the same amount on the coast is simply rain. That’s why it’s wise to look not only at the country, but also at the region. Below are two warm or relatively mild regions for each country, one in the north and one in the south.

Spain

Northern Spain — Bilbao and the Basque coast. Average temperature around 10 degrees. Around 90 mm of precipitation. This isn’t a winter sun destination, but it is a milder northern region with a city, a coastline and good food.

Southern Spain — Southern Tenerife. Average temperature around 18.5 degrees. Around 20 mm of rainfall. This is the best choice within Spain for an all-inclusive winter sun holiday in February. Southern Tenerife is drier, sunnier and warmer than mainland Spain.

Portugal

Northern Portugal — Porto and the coastal region. Average temperature around 10 to 11 degrees. Around 110 to 130 mm of rainfall. Porto is full of character, but February is wet. Choose this mainly for the city, the food and short trips, not for the sun.

Southern Portugal — Madeira, Funchal. Average temperature around 16 to 17 degrees. Around 45 to 75 mm of rainfall. Madeira is the warmest option in Portugal in February. You’ll mainly book this for nature, walking, views and tranquillity.

Cyprus

Northern Cyprus — Kyrenia region. Average temperature around 12 to 13 degrees. Around 55 to 70 mm of rainfall. The north coast is mild, but February remains changeable. Good for relaxation and coastal walks.

Southern Cyprus — Paphos and Limassol. Average temperature around 12 to 14 degrees. Approximately 45 to 60 mm of rainfall. Paphos is a lovely choice in February thanks to the sea, its history and hotels that are pleasant even outside the summer months.

Malta

Northern Malta — Mellieħa and St Paul’s Bay. Average temperature around 12 degrees. Around 60 to 80 mm of rainfall. This region is quiet in February and suitable for coastal walks, but not for proper days at the beach.

Southern Malta — Valletta and Marsaxlokk. Average temperature around 12 to 13 degrees. Around 60 to 75 mm of rainfall. With its towns, harbours and short distances, southern Malta feels lively enough for a winter break.

Turkey

Northern Turkey — Istanbul and the Marmara region. Average temperature around 6 to 7 degrees. Around 70 to 90 mm of rainfall. Istanbul is an interesting destination for culture, but not for all-inclusive winter sun holidays.

Southern Turkey — Antalya, Lara and Belek. Average temperature around 11 to 12 degrees. Approximately 80 to 90 mm of rainfall. In February, the Turkish Riviera’s main attractions are resort comfort, wellness facilities, indoor swimming pools and value for money.

Austria

Northern Austria — Salzburg region. Average temperature around 1 to 3 degrees. Approximately 55 to 70 mm of rainfall. This is a good region for winter sports and winter city breaks. Precipitation in the mountains often falls as snow.

Southern Austria — Carinthia and the Villach region. Average temperature around 2 to 4 degrees. Approximately 45 to 60 mm of rainfall. Southern Austria is often slightly milder and sunnier than many northern valleys. Ideal for families who want to combine skiing with visits to quieter villages.

France

Northern France — the southern coast of Brittany or the Nantes region. Average temperatures of around 7 to 8 degrees. Around 55 to 70 mm of rainfall. This is mild for northern France, but not suitable for a sun holiday. It is, however, good for short breaks.

Southern France — Nice and the Côte d’Azur. Average temperature around 9 to 10 degrees. Around 45 to 60 mm of rainfall. The Côte d’Azur is the mildest option in France in February. For winter sports, you’d be better off choosing the Alps, but for a relaxed, coastal atmosphere, Nice is the better choice.

Italy

Northern Italy — Liguria, Genoa and the Italian Riviera. Average temperature around 8 to 10 degrees. Around 70 to 90 mm of rainfall. This is one of the milder northern regions, with coastal towns and plenty of atmosphere outside the beach season.

Southern Italy — Sicily, the Palermo region. Average temperatures of around 12 to 13 degrees. Around 60 to 80 mm of rainfall. Sicily is the warmest option in Italy in February. Choose it for culture, food, coastal towns and mild winter days.

Switzerland

Northern Switzerland — Basel region. Average temperature around 3 to 4 degrees. Around 45 to 60 mm of rainfall. Basel is relatively mild for Switzerland, but it is not a winter sports destination.

Southern Switzerland — Ticino, Lugano region. Average temperature around 5 to 6 degrees. Around 50 to 70 mm of rainfall. Ticino is the mildest region in Switzerland. For snow, choose Zermatt, Davos or Saas-Fee, but for milder winter weather, Lugano is better.

Southern Slovenia — Slovenian coast, Portorož and Piran. Average temperatures of around 6 to 8 degrees. Approximately 60 to 80 mm of precipitation. The coast is the mildest region of Slovenia in February. Ideal for relaxation, wellness and short walks by the sea.

Andorra

Northern Andorra — Ordino and the Arcalís region. Average temperatures of around -3 to 0 degrees. Around 50 to 70 mm of precipitation. This is a true snow region. Ideal for skiing, but less suitable for travellers seeking warmth.
